In search of a
resting place
You will end up at this part of the website through 2 different locations, because this particular work was first a public intervention in form of a performance, then an installation in a gallery. During Xarkis Residency in 2017, I set a personal quest to hang my hammock in between the most ridiculous and inconvenient spots in Lofou village near Troodos mountains, an extensively renovated UNESCO treasure. Honestly the whole village looks like it is out of a fairy tale.
So I started setting up my hammock in between flag poles, military monuments and abandoned construction sites as a comment on how our public space is governed. During this intervention I got a lot of help from the locals, who found it funny/charming, until they watched a presentation of the whole intervention in the kafeneio tv screen and didn't know how to respond to it. Because, and this is a direct quote, " there is nothing harming but we are not sure if this is disrespectful or not."
I then carried this into the north part of the island where I set up my hammock in the most inconvenient spots - the aim of the game is to not get arrested while doing it.
Xarkis Festival Exhibition
@ Point Center for Contemporary Art
Once the residency was over we were invited to a collective exhibition at Point Center for Contemporary Art, in Nicosia ( The gallery is not there any more, now there is a burger place instead) Where I set up this installation. It was received with mixed feelings as I dared to use flags. I think I was more naive and courageous at the time.
